Lying is Bush Administration
Way of
Life
According to a recent report from the EPA, dioxins and other pollutants were present in the highest concentrations ever recorded in the area affected by 9/11. This could cause sickness and death. But the Bush administration assured those who live and work in the area that the air and environment is perfectly safe.
Rep. Henry Waxman read into the Congressional Record a report showing how the Bush administration has manipulated, distorted or interfered with scientific facts on health, environmental and other issues including:
Abstinence-only education
Agricultural pollution
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Breast Cancer
Condoms Drinking water
Education policy
Environmental health
Food safety
Global warming
HIV/AIDS
Lead poisoning
Missile defense
Oil and gas
Prescription drug advertising
Reproductive health
Stem cells
Substance abuse
Wetlands
Workplace safety
Yellowstone National Park
These lies and distortions serve various constituencies and Bush's corporate cronies. For example, by making up a lie that having an abortion increases the chances of breast cancer, the anti-abortion movement benefited.
Members of Bush's cabinet are also liars. Bush has praised Secretary of Education Dr. Rod Paige, former superintendent of education in Houston, as a miracle-maker. Paige claimed that the dropout rate for Houston high schools was 1.5%. A state audit showed a dropout rate of almost 40%. Paige got principles to lie by removing tenure protections and forcing everybody to be re-hired every year.
If you can't lie convincingly, you stone-wall. The White House refused to make public the list of energy plutocrats that met with Bush and Cheney right after they took office. One result of that meeting was Enron and the theft of millions of dollars from California ratepayers.
Another example of stonewalling is Bush's hiding from the public the number and severity of wounded American soldiers brought back from Iraq. It is estimated to be 4,000-8,000. Bush is also hiding the number of Iraqis killed.
Bush's biggest lie of all was claiming that Iraq was involved in the terrorist attack of 9/11. He used this lie to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Other lies that Bush told regarding the war in Iraq:
"Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction"
"Iraq purchased uranium from Niger for its nuclear weapons program."
"Iraq imported aluminum tubing to use in nuclear weapons production"
"France sold precision switches to Iraq to be used to detonate nuclear bombs."
"Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists and members of al Qaeda."
"We're beginning the difficult work of helping Iraqis build a free and stable
country."
"The people of Iraq will welcome as liberators the United States when we come."
"It has nothing to do with oil." Info from People's Weekly World,

He's a Deceiver
(To the tune of "I'm a
Believer")
They said Bush
is only spinning fairy tales
Made to terrorize both you and
me
Saddam was out to get me
That's the way it
seems
Selling nukes to Osama in my dreams.
Chorus:
Then I saw his
face, yeah he's a deceiver
Not a trace of truth in his eyes
Is
he on drugs? Nooooo...
He's a deceiver and a believer in
his lies.
I thought trust was more or less a giving
thing
Seems the more we gave the less we got
We all know he's
lying
Georgie's looking strange
Tied his tongue so much it's
tied his brain
(Chorus)
From George Mann's CD "Hail to the Thief!"

Welfare Deform:
No Income, Less
Childcare
Milwaukee County families whose only source of income is food stamps has tripled from 600 in 1998 to 1,800 in 2001. 63% of the mothers had been employed. Half lost jobs due to health problems of themselves or their children. The rest had temporary jobs or were fired or laid off when the business closed. Most were looking for work but had transportation or child care problems. Some lacked training for available jobs or had disabilities or felony records. 45% of the families were homeless and living with family or friends or in a shelter. Another 9% were due to be evicted. Lack of stable housing is a huge barrier to employment.
Why no welfare cash for these families in crisis?
51% of the mothers had reached their W-2 (TANF) time limits. 17% were denied benefits, and declared "job ready."
Another 17% were "sanctioned off" of W-2.
15% were forced off W-2 due to sickness, injury or disability of themselves or children.
17% were not enrolled in W-2.

Poverty Makes a Comeback
According to a US Census Bureau report issued in Sept. 2003, The number of poor people increased by 1.7 million in 2002. 34.6 million Americans now live in poverty. Nearly 20% are children.
The number of people with incomes below half of the poverty line increased by 600,000 to 14.1 million.
Income inequality began increasing earlier. The US Congressional Budget Office issued a report showing that between 1979-2000, the gulf between rich and poor more than doubled. The income of the top 1% rose 184.3%. The richest 1% had more money to spend than the bottom 40% in 2000. That's the biggest income gap for any year since the budget office began collecting this data.
In 2001, the number and percentage of female-headed families with children who were without work in an average week, yet had no welfare income, reached the highest point in the 26 years for which data is available.
The number of children in female-headed families without work or welfare living on less than half of the poverty level rose by 441,000 or 30% from 2000 to 2001.
The Black poverty rate rose from 22.7% in 2001 to 24% in 2003.
A July 2003 Census Bureau report also showed that over 35% of the US population was poor for at least two months between 1996 and 1999. President Bill Clinton signed the welfare-to-work bill in 1996 which replaced AFDC with TANF. Info from Toward Freedom
