Informed Consent for Pregnant Women

I have sat silent during the past fifteen years, as those who oppose abortion brain-washed the public about what a terrible crime abortion is.   They railroaded through legislation  which forces abortion clinics to give women information about the fetus. The clinic must also discuss their mental state after the abortion.  Some of the information is either not true or impossible to prove.

Informed consent should not just involve feeding pregnant women half-truths and outright lies concocted by anti- abortion fanatics. Women should be provided with the actual facts of parenthood, which are not a pretty picture.

I have never heard of any attempt to inform women of what might happen if they DO NOT have an abortion. Here at last is that list of vital information:

1.   Pregnancy itself is not free of hazard. The mortality rate of pregnant women has been drastically reduced. However women still die of complications in the pregnancy, during childbirth, and from complications after childbirth.  If the woman in early stages of pregnancy decides to carry the pregnancy to term, there is not a 100% guarantee that she will still be alive in a year.

2.   The fetus might be malformed or might be born with physical or mental disabilities. The woman might spend the rest of her life caring for a terribly handicapped child.

3.   The child might have mental disabilities and might have to be institutionalized all of its life. This will be a financial burden on her and/or on the government.

4.   If she decides to have the baby and keep it as single parents, her chances of finishing high school are    diminished. And college is almost out of the question. So she will end up raising it on welfare and low-paying jobs.

5.   If she has the baby and keeps it, whether she is married or not, she might have post-partum depression. She might even murder the child, for which she might end up in prison for many years.  My guess is the rate of post-partum depression exceeds the rate of depression among women who have abortions.

6.   Some babies have colic and will spend most of their time for the first year screaming. The mom will get little or no sleep. She will spend most of every night rocking and trying to comfort a screaming baby. The baby is obviously in a great deal of distress.  And mom may make repeated doctor’s visits without getting any useful help.

7.   Sometimes when she is fixing dinner or taking a shower, she thinks that the baby is taking a nap. But in fact the baby might have a huge bowel movement, wriggle out of its diaper, smear the shit all over its crib and itself, and start to eat it.

8.   If the baby’s father marries her, there is a 50% chance they will divorce. She will end up either fighting in court for custody of the child or taking care of it as a single parent. She will often do this without any help from the father.

9.   Some fathers sexually and physically abuse their own children, even infants. And if she marries him and has more children, it might be years before she finds this out.

10. Some men become depressed after they are married and have children. They murder their children and wives and then commit suicide.

11. Some babies are extremely difficult when they are around two years old. The child might break nearly every keepsake she has, including family heirlooms.

12. If she has the baby and keeps it, it may be a victim of a sexual predator. This can occur from the time she is a little tyke running out the door to play with her little friend three doors down until she graduates from high school. The predator may be anyone:

            • the child’s father or some other family member,

            • a neighbor,

            • the school bus driver,

            • a teacher or other school official,

            • the leader of a scout troop or some other after-school activity,

            • a Sunday School teacher or a priest or pastor,

            • some stranger that stalks children on playgrounds, amusement parks, shopping malls, or on the internet.

She may not know about it until it has been going on for years. And it will be too late to do anything about it.  (Talk about something causing depression. This happening is infinitely worse than having had an abortion.)

13. Teenagers are almost always impossible to control. Daughters become impregnated by the village idiot. Both boys and girls experiment with alcohol and drugs. And the child might die from that. Or they might die from automobile or other accidents resulting from using them. Or they might be so badly injured as to be dependent upon their family for the rest of their life.

14. One day mom might come home early from work unexpectedly. She may find her teenaged son, who is supposed to be in school, having a kegger with his friends. And there is a naked teenaged girl dancing on her coffee table.

15. Some kids drop out of high school in spite of all their parents do to keep them in school. This may doom them to a limited future, working in dead end jobs for minimum wage. Or it may force them into criminal acts to survive.

16. Some kids grow up to be sexual predators.  They might become serial rapists and child molesters and humiliate their families.

Pregnant women seeking abortions are informed that their fetus feels pain when it is aborted, thought that cannot be proven. They are told they may become depressed if they get an abortion. (Actually, whether they get an abortion or not they’re likely to be depressed. But that doesn’t seem to be of any interest to those opposed to legal abortions.) So women should also be informed of the above possibilities as well.

The little plaster of Paris depictions of fetuses should be replaced with realistic depictions of human fetuses. (These images are mostly fanciful inventions of over-zealous anti-choice fanatics.) At three months a human fetus cannot be distinguished from chicken fetuses.  If women knew the truth, there would be a rush on abortion clinics. There would be an abortion clinic building boom.

In fact, I would recommend against informing all teen-aged girls of these eventualities.  If you did, within a generation apes would have taken over the earth. Nobody would have children if they knew what was in for them if they did.

I am sick of seeing all the misleading crap on TV about how cute kids are. They push how much fun they are. They claim you will get your video on AFV if you have a video with a cute kid on it.  Hell, they even think a baby farting is cute.  This is a pack of lies.  It is like sex, which is actually the most over-rated experience in life.  Rearing children comes in only second on that list. For every instant of pleasure enjoyed from child rearing, a mom is likely to experience a year (or 18 years, or a lifetime) of abject misery.

Why don’t pro-choice organizations get the ACLU to take legal action against states having informed consent laws? They should sue to force the clinics to include this information about child rearing in their informed consent statutes. But I suppose they don’t want to be responsible for the demise of the human race.
